The website is intended to help students learn more about food and health, and to encourage them to ask questions about how our food is produced and its effect on our wellbeing and the environment.

The Food Magazine brings you the facts about nutrition and health. Each issue reports on the types of foods which you, your pupils and your family eat every day. The magazine is essential reading for anyone with an interest in food and its affect on both our health and our environment.

The Food Magazine is published by the Food Commission - a non government organisation which campaigns for healthier, safer food in the UK.

To view a low resolution copy of a recent issue, click on the magazine image (This is a 1.2MB pdf file, so could take a few minutes to download. The file will open in a new window).

The Food Magazine can be purchased online using a credit card, debit card or PayPal, and can also be ordered by normal mail. An annual subscription costs £24.50. If you subscribe by Direct Debit it is only £20.00. Every new subscriber receives their first issue free and can also claim free copies of the posters sold below, saving over £13.00!

Posters

Food labelling, food additives and the quality of children's food are important issues which can be discussed in the classroom. The Food Commission has produced three A3 colour posters which can help both children and adults understand these issues.

The posters can be viewed or downloaded in low resolution format by clicking on the posters shown below. The posters can also be purchased for £2.50 each (inclusive of postage and packing to the UK). They can be ordered online using a credit card, debit card or PayPal or by normal post.

Anaphylaxis Campaign

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) is the body that aims to keep advertising 'legal, decent, honest and truthful'. The ASA can take action against print and broadcast advertisements, direct marketing, sales promotions and advertorial content (paid-for advertisements that appear to be impartial, but which mimic editorial content).

Baby Milk Action
It is estimated that 1.5 million babies die around the world every year because they are not fed on natural breast milk. In countries where water is not safe to drink, a bottle-fed child is up to 25 times more likely to die as a result of diarrhoea than a child fed on breast milk. Baby Milk Action is campaigning to save lives and to end the suffering caused by inappropriate infant feeding.

The British Dietetic Association is the professional association for dietitians. The website includes useful fact sheets and good nutritional advice but there is no specific section for school students.

The British Heart Foundation plays a leading role in the fight against heart disease. The website contains a useful section for teachers of secondary students aged 11-16, providing curriculum-linked lesson plans and downloadable presentations.

The British Nutrition Foundation is largely funded by multinational food companies such as Nestlé, Unilever, Coca-Cola and McDonald's.

Compassion in World Farming (CIWF)
Much of the meat eaten in the UK is the product of factory farming (the large-scale, industrialised, intensive rearing of livestock and poultry). CIWF campaigns for the abolition of factory farming and to improve welfare standards for farm animals. The CIWF Trust produces a range of educational resources, including videos, teaching activities and packs, information booklets, web-based software and more.

Fairtrade Foundation
Many everyday foods, such as coffee, chocolate and bananas, are grown by small-scale farmers in poor countries. The Fairtrade Foundation was set up to ensure that poor producers in developing countries receive a fair price for their produce, and that workers receive fair wages and decent working conditions. Despite the big name, the Food Commission is a small, independent team of researchers, journalists and nutritionists. The website contains lots of useful articles. The Food Commission also publishes a great quarterly magazine called The Food Magazine.

Pesticide Action Network UK (PAN UK)
Pesticides are the only chemicals deliberately made to be toxic and introduced directly into the environment. They are used in farming, in homes, and in urban areas to kill or control insects, weeds and diseases. Unwanted residues can be found in humans, water, food, air and soil. PAN UK campaigns to raise awareness of pesticides and to reduce dependence on these toxic chemicals. They produce an educational video for secondary schools and a school pesticide audit and guide.

The Smart Shopper’s Guide is a complete reading resource on the Internet designed to enable teachers to give pre-leaver students of 14 years old and above, (including those with Special Educational Needs) a basic grounding in consumer rights and to help them to make better choices.
